AT FIFTY-EIGHT

Things I am against include

slurping raw oysters the scream

of city sirens perfumed magazine inserts

scotch-broom pollen lost earrings

Cliff Notes slivers elevator music

sore ankles striving papery wasp nests

against loud whisperers strip malls

marmots self-cleaning oven smell

cynicism firecrackers movie previews

that give away the whole show

I am for lightning storms in the desert

tonkotsu ramen at Samurai Noodle

the moments between dreaming and waking

Jane in the garden humming “Silver Threads

Among the Gold” list-making the blue hour

vintage salt-and-pepper shakers

pitting pie cherries for friends who bake

Stevie Nick’s Landslide handwritten letters

clear nail polish vanilla almond tea

I am for Brad’s marinara sauce robins

in the birdbath joyfully shaking

their feathers roomy flannel pajamas

for Fran’s gray salt caramels

in dark chocolate waking to

Mexican music in the orchard

the hummingbird hovering whirring

at the rose my lover’s hand

grazing my hip in the night
