 NAVY RUM

For his birthday,

Neville would always wash

his rum cake down with Navy Rum.

“That’s how the lord God

want the world, even up here

in Florida: sips that catch fire on your tongue,

and fire feeling in your skull

to see if there’s any brains in there.

Sparrow speaking for God

when he sing, what’s the use

of getting sober?....Look up and see

how the sun shining drunk and can’t

tell Abel from Cain. Look

how God put me here in Miami

and Gail me wife in a Trelawny grave.
