After the Night Rain

The rains came after midnight, slow

at first...

Still it woke me & I listened

with closed eyes, imagining rain-

drops tapping every leaf, every

stone, every bit of dust that sticks

to summer’s rough surfaces.

                      The rains came on

slow & stayed until morning...

A long ago rain—one that rasps

as it sinks, ever so deeply.
