Precious

The professor at the college museum

pointed to it and called it precious.

Precious: highly esteemed, valuable.

So look again

     into this swirly gray slab,

     this slice of pearly granite.

See.

See the long bony creature

embedded in the smooth surface,

this mesosaurus,

a long graceful string of bones,

four one-inch legs, tiny boned feet,

          going where?

I sit in front of him

to study the thin head,

the snake-like body,

the long curved tail,

     the mystery of a creature

     creeping, surviving,

but now only surviving

to touch my life

from 300 million years ago,

a silent reptile who left land

     to live in water forever.

Swim, swim mesosaurus.

You swim from there

to here,

    before my clouded eyes.
