After a Line by Blas de Otero

"A tiny glimmer and the day,

a specific day, Monday”

There were roses

That I recall

and bullets

I heard but didn't see

and never knew who lay in the road with a bunch of lace at his throat.

And I never heard the drum

Never got the call

Never marched off to Verdun or Vietnam

Just a Monday in Manhattan, or was it Dublin or Dallas or Brussels?

Just another day with tiny glimmers

budding roses

and unspecific promises

Until we heard the guns

Until we heard the guns
