THE OTHER GIRLS WEAR DRESSES

She has Barbie dolls too, but mostly they lie naked under the bed or drive imaginary sports cars. Sometimes she papers their shoebox wall houses with leftover wallpaper or has them sit on inflatable floral pink furniture spread out on the lawn.  The other girls, Pamela and Denise, come to visit and her mother wants a photo on the blanket in the grass.  Pamela wears a light blue dress, her dark hair flowing, and Denise has her blonde hair tied with a bow. They pose and smile for the camera, sitting politely. She sits with them, squinting into the sun behind her baby blue cat's eye glasses, with the striped slacks her mother made for her cuffed up around her legs, her socks and dark shoes next to the girls' elegant sandals.  Little brother is here with their dalmation dog ready to be the horse.  Time to go, time to play cowboys and Indians.
