SONG AND SEED

I dreamed of a child’s song; a child
who rhymed the sea’s words.

Verse rose from flame, brine; from a fin
set on newly dried sand. Words

as polished hand-me-downs; remains
of hard, ancient lives; willed
from a mesh of earth
and star.

The child’s song
filled my cupped hands: became
the breath I breathe, took the shape
of an airborne seed.
