                 Caveat Emptor

                  by James Rawbone

It was the wording of the advert on Ebay which caught Julian’s eye. ‘This will insidiously control you, become part of you, become your brother, mother, secret lover. If you’ve never had one before, soon you will wonder how you ever lived without it. It will tell you what to do, what to wear, what to eat and drink, above all what to think. Eventually it will subsume you.’

Whatever it was, it sounded like a hell of a lot for just over a hundred pounds. Now it stood squat and square where the deliveryman had dumped it in his hallway. Julian tore at the packaging in an ecstasy of anticipation.

It was only when he had ripped away the last remnants of brown cardboard that he was somewhat disappointed to find it was a television.
