Morning’s Refrain

The morning, stained

By newsprint and unfulfilled appetites,

Surrenders to fog,

Migrating birds lifting their songs

Carefully above telephone wires

The slate roofs

Covered in frost and leaves

Sanctify the block

Pose as harmony; I’ve learned everything

Twice,

Forgotten how to hold

My coffee in perfect stillness

Dreamt I saw a fox sneak

Through a windstorm

of auburn maple leaves
