No Fish, Only Chips

In the medical building

there are ninety people in the waiting room

babies

born and unborn

Doctors ignore the crowded chamber

and fistfight over the question of

when life begins

In a back room someone screams

and won’t stop screaming

Two octogenarian women compete

in a race to slide out of their wheelchairs

They are past Paralympic champs,

toothless American heroes

As for me

I’m waiting for my turn at the

blood-purification machine

I should never have eaten those paint chips

but I was too young to know any better

and I was hungry

                                     —Mitchell Grabois
