This Dream

You had this dream of me

I know

though you didn’t tell me about it,

where I was a small animal that fit

in the firm middle of your hand.

My tiny paws felt hot

pressed on your palm and

the living weight of me

set on your skin sent a thrill

up your arm that was real-

not dreamlike at all.

So that when I scurried

up to the place between your shoulder

and your ear, and rested

my jaws with their tiny needle teeth

close beside your neck

you weren’t afraid of me-

you let me stay

and warm you.
