“A Eulogy for Charles Goodnight”*

Behind cracked glass

die young men’s dreams

of driving cattle

north

Cloth bucket seats

replace tanned saddle hides—

transmissions, sharp silver

spurs

For monument bus

tours, tip your guide—

he’s one-sixteenth

Cheyenne

‘Closed for Season,’

mapped guard-railed highways

stifle restless, wandering

eyes

Wide pavement caging

conquers coyotes and buffalo

chasers, forever killing

Goodnight

                       Brad Kavo

*Charles Goodnight was a legendary cattle driver in the late 1800s who helped forge the Goodnight-Loving cattle trail.
