GEEK

Thick glasses, scrawny neck, acne,

Physics, comic book heroes, chess,

Cliché of attributes. He doesn’t imagine

Biting off the heads of live chickens,

Only a desperate man, a man with no

Money would enter that cage

Of derision. Which unlike high school

Is voluntary. Counselors tell him

It will get better, but that doesn’t ease him

Through the corridors of popularity. The rash

On his knuckles, the adam’s apple, sudden baritone

He can’t control, foghorn out of nowhere

And girls, girls, girls.

The sideshow beckons him. The tattooed lady,

Wild man of Borneo. In their presence

He could exhale flame like a dragon,

Swallow the sabers of memory. Kick off

The corrective shoes and stride barefoot

Into the university of everywhere.
