REGARDING WAITING

Koh Chang, Thailand

Sometimes I can’t see the rain

until I hear its battering

on the banana tree leaves.

I wait under the awnings

of coffee shops and nail salons

as the rain grows heavy and then subsides.

This is when I notice, on a cement wall,

a gecko clinging in quiet ease yet

poised to spring.  If the gecko cries

while you speak it is truth,

a Sumatran man once told me.

The geckos are silent here.

What kind of waiting is this?
