Point of Order

Trained in sabotage by the Royal Engineers

to blow up bridges and railway lines,

suspect the doll lying on the rubble

of a captured town is booby-trapped,

and never turn one’s back to a door,

I recognize danger, expect it.

I live there.

One balmy evening after eating out

in Chelsea, my girlfriend’s redheaded

sister bade me goodnight innocently,

yet in a way that startled to the core,

left me standing in the street watching her

melt away into the festive throng.

I’m still there.

A charge laid and primed,

the bridge dangerous.
