The Coroner for the Amish School Murders,

Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, 2006

I remember her interview on the news

describing the colored pictures left

of hills and trees and silhouettes of birds in flight

and the bonnets and capes

against the back wall

spotless

above a blood-splattered floor

as if she were still in that room

the color

draining  from her face

as she tried to account

for what would leave her

the rest of her life

a witness of death

in medias res.
