Vow of Silence

To a mind that is still,

                             The whole universe surrenders.

                                        ~ Chang Tsu

Distant brush fires seam

the mountainside—

smoke erases the moon.

Deep in the forest,

mute songbirds

settle in windless trees.

Under the earth,

tap roots

ration autumn rain.

Beneath the waves,

silent fish wait

for the lake to freeze.
