The Ring

Paging through the wedding album,

we recall those death has taken

in the quarter-century since we married.

A crow-silhouette of melancholy

shuttles across memory’s lit space.

Looking back on that bright day

and those bright spirits, love, let us

never mistake the buoyant life

that carried them, all who brought

to the moment their quick gift of presence.

Their light still suffuses our inner sky—

years shine in us like a gold ring

in which birds of love, sun and

shadow joined in their flight, circle

and circle, without end, without beginning.
