BETWEEN US

When I was eight

and you were ten

we tied together

over a thousand rubber bands

to test how far

it could be stretched—

we ended up

on opposite sides

of the field

down the street

from our childhood house.

Then years of silence

holding on

to the knotted belief

that if we spoke

we’d lose the pull.
