TO A CHILD AT THE PIANO

Small white fronds

     of hands

stir an unsteady, soft-

     noted breeze in the glare

of lamp, of expectation.

No match

     for these teeth, fingering

the frozen smile

without a sound, trying to read

the braille of a mother’s love.
