Sundial

The gnomon casts it shadow,

light becomes the fragment

on the face of it, “the best is yet to be”—

but who’s to say? (looking out at darkened strips like runways).

The yard divides

day from night, taking off.  The “best” shade struck,

stretching wider than the sliver that is sun

dialed up, a moment,

diminishing

(even if you think it’s just begun),

gifted by the moon’s benevolence.
