Bad Luck

She heard tires squeal on the rain-slick street. No thud, except

for her book dropping to the bamboo mat as she got up to look

out the window. Her little dog lifted his sleepy head and watched

her strain her voice to shout at the chickens wandering in the yard

under the mulberry tree. The little dog woofed too, showing

support, but he didn’t get up to see what was going on. He knew

it was no big deal.  Not this time, but she remembers the Big

Wheel caught under the van, the sirens screaming, the neighbors

staring at her.
